English Language Institute (ELI) students are better prepared for the TOEFL exam than they have ever been. For many students, making a 75 or 80 on the TOEFL is the only way to meet the English proficiency requirement of an American university. If you are an F-1 student who wants to pursue an education in the U.S., this program will greatly benefit you.
Students come to us who speak, write, read and understand English at different levels. A student shouldn’t be in a class that he or she has already mastered nor should they be in a class that is too advanced. Incorrect placement can allow students to move though the program without learning what they need to learn.
Our objective at the ELI is to make sure our students are working on the areas in English that is appropriate for them to ensure a quality learning experience. We use an internationally recognized placement test and our initial spoken interaction to make initial placement and allow for a period of time for the student to determine their comfort level in their classes.
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) a framework of learning, teaching, and assessment reference. It was designed to provide a transparent, coherent and comprehensive basis for language training. Our program consists of 4 levels that correspond (approximately) to the CEFR levels A1, A2, B1, B2/C1. Moving up a level will depend upon retaking the placement test at the end of the course. These tests will cover all the topics that should have been learned in that particular level.
Students who receive a “Pass” or “Pass +” on the primary student learning outcomes for a level, are then recommended to move on to the next level. In Level 4, an authentic practice TOEFL is administered 2 or 3 times and is available for 4 more times, if the student wishes. Although it may seem challenging, this guides our students to full preparation for the TOEFL exam.
The ELI is housed in the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center on the Columbus State University campus, which is also an authorized TOEFL testing center. ELI students may register separately to take the TOEFL, which is usually offered once a month at our testing site.
